• A volume in Research on Religion and EducationSeries Editors Stephen J. Denig, Niagara Universityand Lyndon G. Furst, Andrews UniversityThis book is a study of the contributions of Catholic K-12 schools in the United States to the public interestfrom the 1800's to the present. It presents seven strategies that have the possibility of leading Catholicschools in positive, new directions. Outsiders often misunderstand the mission, purpose, and inclusivity ofCatholic schools. This book brings a new focus on Catholic schools from the perspective of their service tothis country through the education of Catholics and non-Catholics. In 16 chapters, a variety of scholarsexamine these schools across three periods: echoes of the past, realities of the present, and futuredirections. The intention of the editor and authors of this volume is that Catholic schools and those interested inconducting Catholic school research will find guidance, especially in examining newer types ofpartnerships flourishing in different types of Catholic schools in different regions of the country and types of schools from rural, suburban to city andinner-city schools. By increasing the data we have, such studies could help stem the tide of Catholic school demise. In addition, Catholic school leaders, and parents who chose them or are thinking about choosing them, will find here a balanced description of whatconstitutes a Catholic school and how they are different from public schools. • Ignoring Poverty in the U.S.: The Corporate Takeover of Public Education examinesthe divide between a commitment to public education and our cultural myths and morepowerful commitment to consumerism and corporate America. The book addressespoverty in the context of the following: the historical and conflicting purposes in publiceducation-how schools became positivistic/behavioral in our quest to produceworkers for industry; the accountability era-how A Nation at Risk through NCLBhave served corporate interest in dismantling public education and dissolving teachersunions; the media and misinformation about education; charter schools as political/corporate compromise masking poverty; demonizing schools and scapegoatingteachers-from misusing the SAT to VAM evaluations of teachers; rethinking thepurpose of schools-shifting from schools as social saviors to addressing poverty sothat public education can fulfill its purpose of empowering everyone in a democracy; and reframing how we view peopleliving in poverty-rejecting deficit views of people living in poverty and students struggling in school under the weight oflives in poverty. This work is intended to confront the growing misinformation about the interplay among poverty, public schools, and whatschools can accomplish while political and corporate leadership push agendas aimed at replacing public education withalternatives such as charter schools. • The book compares the standardized test scores of both elementary and high schoolscharter schools with the scores for regular public schools located nearby. It examines theposition supported by charter school advocates that charter schools should be supportedbecause they outperform regular public schools. Given that charter schools in Chicago haveenjoyed a great deal of support from the past two mayors, and that they make up some 20%of all public schools in the city, Chicago is the perfect location in which to examine thiscritical issue.Charter schools siphon money and in theory better students from regular public schools at a time when public schoolsin almost every big city faces financial difficulties. Teachers unions oppose them, as do most liberal scholars.Conservatives and big business support them, as do most conservative scholars. The existence of charter schools is amost divisive issue! Yet, little real data exist to allow us to properly judge the effectiveness of charters. The currentwork changes that by examining test data in a sophisticated manner that allows comparisons between charters andregular schools. This work should move the debate forward, but will no doubt generate controversy as well.

  • In her groundbreaking history of 175 years of American education, Dana Goldstein finds answers in the past to the controversies that plague our public schools today. Teaching is a wildly contentious profession in America, one attacked and admired in equal measure. In The Teacher Wars, a rich, lively, and unprecedented history of public school teaching, Dana Goldstein reveals that teachers have been similarly embattled for nearly two centuries. From the genteel founding of the common schools movement in the nineteenth century to the violent inner-city teacher strikes of the 1960s and 70s, from the dispatching of Northeastern women to frontier schoolhouses to the founding of Teach for America on the Princeton University campus in 1989, Goldstein shows that the same issues have continued to bedevil us: Who should teach? What should be taught? Who should be held accountable for how our children learn? She uncovers the surprising roots of hot button issues, from teacher tenure to charter schools, and finds that recent popular ideas to improve schools - instituting merit pay, evaluating teachers by student test scores, ranking and firing veteran teachers, and recruiting elite graduates to teach - are all approaches that have been tried in the past without producing widespread change. And she also discovers an emerging effort that stands a real chance of transforming our schools for the better: drawing on the best practices of the three million public school teachers we already h...

  • Women of Vision is a book that expands significantly public knowledge of the contributions of Catholic laywomen to church and society over the past century.Despite historic advances in women’s recognition and equality over the past half-century, the significant roles played by Roman Catholic laywomen in church and society still go largely unacknowledged. With Women of Vision: Sixteen Founders of the International Grail Movement, Marian Ronan and Mary O’Brien contribute substantially to remedying this situation.Founded in the Netherlands in 1921, just after World War I, the Grail movement was focused, from the outset, on using laywomen’s extraordinary gifts to resolve the crises in which the world found itself. By 1961, the movement had spread to twenty other countries, including Brazil, Australia, the Philippines and nine African countries.Drawn from interviews done with Grail founders in many of these countries, Women of Vision highlights the relentless and often heroic work done by Grail women, founding and staffing hospitals and schools, supporting indigenous women and girls, preparing local women for church and Grail leadership, and in some cases, assuming governance roles in their own countries and at the United Nations. "The Grail founders whose voices are heard in this volume were and are women of great faith and enterprise. Their stories are invaluable to the history of the movement that inspired them.” —Alden V. Brown, author, The Grail Movement and American Cath...

  • Hilaire Belloc's Europe and the Faith will be of interest to all those - Catholic and non-Catholic equally - who value the contributions of European Civilisation and see possibilities in a United Europe beyond the trade agreements, red tape and political bureaucracy of the present EU. Belloc, the famous poet, essayist, novelist and historian, here shows the organic unity upon which Europe was built over the course of centuries, her rise, flourishing, subversion and decline into petty-statism, capitalism and tyranny. He looks beyond the persistent anti-Catholic propaganda and shows that Catholic Europe was the high point of European Civilisation where even the humblest of people lived well. Belloc shows that tyranny, greed, exploitation and disunity were ushered by the Reformation, heralding the capitalism and plutocracy that continue to enslave the world.Kerry Bolton's 'Introduction' reviews Belloc's major points, drawing from the famous social commentator William Cobbett, who showed that even the humblest classes of Medieval Europe lived far better than their counterparts centuries later. Bolton shows further that the present conception of European Union is a counterfeit and a fraud, planned and implemented by the Church's traditional enemy, Freemasonry, whose aim is not a Europe of faith but a secular Europe as a prelude to a 'Universal Republic', as shown by Masonic boasts. Also traced is the meaning of 'Europe', its birth as a spirit...

  • In Tudor times, paupers who complained about their treatment would be whipped. In modern times, charities that campaign too vigorously on behalf of their beneficiaries are accused of "political activity," and risk their legal status and government funding being withdrawn. The Alms Trade looks at how the concept of charity turned full circle under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's campaign to bring back Victorian values. Just as how, in the 19th century, the government broke its own laws, stealing from the poor to endow public schools for the rich, modern judges have ruled that private hospitals, because they do not explicitly exclude the poor, are entitled to charitable status.Ian Williams identifies the legal concept of "bounty versus bargain" as representing the two conflicting approaches that underlie both the development of charity law and the welfare services, and the relationship between citizen and state. He also discusses how the archaic privileges of the state church were extended to all other religions and cults, with effect ranging from the comic to the disastrous, and how religious intolerance was converted by judges into the doctrine that charities may not engage in political activities.A lively, well-written examination of a neglected area of public interest, this is a work that, in the present political climate, is of critical importance.Liverpool born and educated, IAN WILLIAMS is a freelance writer specializing in activist journalism. To be sure, identity and mission are deeply interconnected but offer different starting points for reflection on formation. The authors of this volume, working in Catholic higher education, elementary and secondary education, Catholic social services and pastoral ministries—articulate a number of challenges when it comes to formation around Catholic identity. How does the Catholic identity of a college or university enter into the curriculum and institutional practices of a community? How does Catholic identity contribute to the training and self-understanding of educators in elementary and secondary schools? How does an organization inspire and empower the laity into leadership? At the heart of these questions is the challenge of building the common good within the Church and for the world.

The answers are grounded in law using the latestprecedent. The background material before examining charters sets forth both the legal and policy contextsof religious charters schools. The legal context includes a detailed analysis of the EstablishmentClause of the U.S. Constitution focusing on the most recent Supreme Court cases on that topic. The policyanalysis examines the normative and structural dimensions of charter schools, which are then comparedwith voucher programs. The historical, political and educational contexts of charter programs are also examined. The book concludes that charter schools present anopportunity for parents and communities to form charter schools that will accommodate their beliefs; however, the constitution does notallow them to form schools that endorse their beliefs.

  • The purpose of this empirical inquiry of state-recognized "Honor Schools of Excellence"was to explore how these schools of distinction are (or are not) promoting and supportingboth academic excellence and systemic equity for all students. In Phase One, quantitative datawere collected through equity audits to scan for and then document systemic patterns of equityand inequity across multiple domains of student learning and activities within 24 schools. InPhase Two, the 24 schools were ranked, based solely on minority achievement, and then separatedinto two types of schools, small gap (SG) schools and large gap (LG) schools. Through sitevisits (n=16) and the use of semi-structured interviews with principals, assistant principals, teachers, and parent leaders (n=80), qualitativedata were then collected to document best practices and effective strategies that principals use to confront and change past practicesanchored in open and residual racism and class discrimination. The data were analyzed through the theoretical framework of academicoptimism.Three differences between the SG schools and the LG schools were found (encouraging academic achievement, offeringinstructional feedback, and expecting excellence). To truly honor excellence, we need to embrace equity. As such, in schools whereprincipals support, model, and monitor a teamwork approach, a balanced approach, a strong sense of purpose, and an insistent dispositionto assure that all students are served well and that ...

  • Critical Small Schools: Beyond Privatization in New York City Urban Educational Reform features themost current empirical research about the successes and challenges of the small schools movement and theimplications of such for urban public educational policy. Situated in a climate of hierarchical reform, manyof the principles of the original small schools movement-which are rooted in community participation, innovative pedagogies and assessment, and equity and social justice-have become obscured by aneducational agenda that emphasizes top-down mandates and standards-based reform. With the increasedpopularity and the rapid proliferation of small schools, the emphasis on 'size only' has resulted in abifurcation of the small schools movement; on one end are the small schools which have embraced thedemocratic, participatory, and self-governing nature of the original movement, while on the other end areschools that have simply reduced their size without rethinking school structures and practices. This book distinguishes the small schools featured and researched in this volume from schools that are simply small and labels them "critical smallschools." By documenting the practices that take place in various critical small schools in New York City, we show how these schools have narrowedthe achievement gap and increased graduation and college acceptance rates. Although smallness is an essential feature in the design of these schools, itis certainly not the only one and...

This book explains how.Bruce Deitrick Price is the country’s most prolific and aggressive writer on education. He is good at explaining the root causes, the problems that typically occur, and the ideological obsessions that lead our Education Establishment astray. This book presents 65 articles divided into 10 themes: Reading; Math; Weird Theories and Methods; Common Core; Historical Background; Guilty as Charged; Where Are Our Leaders; and What to Do Now. You can read the articles in any order and dip in wherever you want. This is pleasant reading about grim topics. If we don’t save the public schools, we’re not going to save very much else.

  • After the Collapse of Public Schools is the fourth in a series of books Richard Neal has written on the subject of freedom of choice in education. It is the culmination of many years of research and experience and covers topics not included in the author's previous books. The key lessons revealed in this book are: The government's interest in education can be satisfied while simultaneously allowing maximum freedom of choice for all families.Without certain essential prerequisites in place, there can be no true freedom of choice. There are powerful lobbies in The Education Establishment that willfully resist change. To them, freedom is the enemy. Many obstacles are in the way of freedom of choice, most of which are contrived to perpetuate the status quo.Striking differences exist between "education" in government schools and meaningful learning under freedom of choiceTrue freedom in education unleashes a bounty of new learning opportunities not possible in government schools. The dominance of the government monopoly in education is coming to an end as competition is allowed to flourish.Technology is becoming an unstoppable force in releasing students from compulsory attendance (incarceration?) in government schools.Revealed in this book are the fundamental guiding principles for effective learning, most of which are not possible in public schools. This book provides a unique forecast of what education will be like After the Collapse of Public Schools.
